With my first son I was up and back to work 2 weeks after my c section. I had family I was comfortable with watching him every day and financially needed to go back. This time around I am lucky enough to have 12 weeks paid with my position. With twins I will need every minute of that. My question is, since there is a good chance I might end up on some sort of bed rest, does that qualify as short term disability? I don't want most of my time off used before the babies arrive. I don't have anyone this time around that can watch TWO babies. I need to stay with them at least 12 weeks.

At most places, bed rest will qualify for STD. It also starts your FMLA, so your 12 weeks starts from the first day of a qualified event (missing 3 days due to family or medical). It doesn't mean you cannot take additional weeks after the babies are born, it just means your FMLA protection is up 12 weeks after going out.

Hopefully you can bypass bedrest. My SIL gave birth to 2 5.5 pound boys and didn't have bedrest at all.

Ugh, yeah, that is so stressful! I just found out I get not one single day of maternity time... Absolutely SHOCKING to say the least!
I hope you won't have to take any time for bedrest!

Zkat pretty much summed it up. I hope you won't have to use any time before the babies are born. I also don't qualify for any maternity leave whatsoever as a part time employee for a small company.

It can also differ by state. I know in California, the state will give you up to 6 weeks before your due date if the doctor deems it necessary, and that does not take away from your actual maternity leave (CA STD will pay 60% of your salary while you're out too, so if your work coverage doesn't pay, you would still get some money). I would talk to your HR and see how things are for your state and for your company.
