So, I am thinking that one of these days I will go to a doctors appointment, they will weigh me, I will pee in a cup, we will listen to the heartbeat, and I will leave and come back in 4 weeks...That's how this is supposed to go, right? BUT NO! My appointments always end in confusion, tears, and frustration...

A recap of the latest saga- my NT results showed elevated risk of Downs...options were Maternit21- not covered by insurance, Amnio, or CVS (both covered by insurance). Talking with the specialist, and my SO, we landed on amnio. Today I saw my regular doctor (who I trust, and has delivered my other children) and he said DO NOT do the amnio.... with the blood clot, and a couple of other factors he feels it is too much risk to the pregnancy. My SO WANTS the amnio because he feels it will help us be prepared for whatever comes our way, and feels that the specialist wouldn't steer us in the wrong direction. I am stuck in the middle of the 2 thoughts. I want to...need to...know what's going on with this baby, because we have a combined 3 other children to prepare for any special circumstances this babe might bring, but I don't want to risk the pregnancy...

I am at an absolute, overwhelmed loss as to what to do right now...and though I am usually good at going with my gut, I just feel like there is no easy solution.

On the beautiful side, baby has a strong heartbeat so that was a wonderful thing to hear!

My suggestion would be wait until 20+ weeks after the anatomy scan and see what if the risk factors for downs are present at that scan and if they are then do the amnio then. Lord knows I would be banging down doors to know but you still can know and it be much safer for the baby weeks from now. That way you still have 20 weeks to prepare your children and the risk (though still present) is less. I would say do not for any reason do something you are uncomfortable with

Well, you are keeping this baby no matter what....so maybe I sound a little weird saying this but what if you didn't do any test?

Why not just arm yourself with information on Downs syndrome now, knowing there is a chance, and just be prepared just in case?

What is knowing for sure one way or the other really going to change? Is your pregnancy going to be any different?

I am not in your shoes, but this seems to be the least risky way of things?

I also agree with CartersMommy

I'm so sorry things are still so uncertain. I'm really not sure what I would do in your situation. I understand your need to know and prepare, I would be the same way, and wouldn't stop worrying until I knew one way or another. I didn't know you could find out for sure at the 20 wk scan if the baby has downs syndrome. If that is true, I might wait until then and see what they find. The amnio scares me, and if the Dr. is saying that's not a good idea, then maybe it isn't. Could you get another opinion from another specialist. You would think they would have more knowlege about the risks involved. Good luck with what ever you decide, and I pray that everything is just fine with baby and all this worry is for nothing!

Hello there,

Actually I'm part of the August 2010 Playroom, but browsing sometime the others boards, cos' I would love to have another baby

With my number two I decided to have an amnio, because of high risk of the test for down syndrome (1:69).

It was no painful at all. I just stayed for 3 days in bed rest after doing it and that's it.

That same week I had the wonderful news that I was expecting a healthy baby boy. For my opinion, better have it for your peace of mind. The 20 weeks scan cannot detect for sure if baby has Down Syndrome or not.

But again, that's only my opinion

The best of luck to you and your little one!

Just so my post was clear I know they can not tell for sure by the 20 week scan or any ultrasound for that matter But maybe waiting to see if the risk factors are present at that scan would either ease your mind or raise more of a red flag therefore you *might* have more information to decide if an amnio is right for you. 20 week scan totally aside waiting until is was a bit safer for baby seems like an option that maybe both you and your bf would be more comfortable with ? regradless of anything sweet lady I am praying for you and baby!!

I say trust your mommy instinct on this one. If you are comfortable with the level of risk doing the amnio now, then go for it. I can't even imagine the amount of stress you are feeling with this decision.

Thank you everyone for the advice & support...It really is a tough decision on how to move forward with this, balancing all of the information. Hopefully, we will land on one that makes all of us- me, my SO and both doctors feel both informed and comfortable. I will keep you all informed!

I think I would wait but go about my pregnancy as if the outcome of the amnio showed downs. Preparing myself doing all the research. Then at my 20 week scan if there were still markers I would decide to likely do the amnio. Huge hugs lady!
