Make sure you have a digital thermometer!!!

As well, have some oval or gripe water as well as infant tylenol in the house. You NEVER know when a fever, teething, gas pain might strike and its better to have it instead of rushing out when yu have a sick little one.

I ALWAYS have infant tylenol in the house for DS.

I came back to look for this thread. I am trying to make a list for a registry. I am SO overwhelmed its ridiculous.

Just looking at stuff on amazon made me nervous. I am a list maker... its a mix of my ADD and OCD.

I am definitely using your suggestions on what I DON'T need. I just don't want to miss anything :-/

I had a changing table with my first and used it a lot.

Now I use the counter in my bathroom with a beach towel as a pad. It very convenient, if the towel gets dirty you can fold it or flip it until the job is done. done The sink is right there for cloth diapers ( we have a septic system so no grey black water separation) my bathroom is so big I have both the kids dressers in there.

My kids have slept in a laundry basket with a towel for a mattress, swing, bouncy chair home made cradle, pack in play, crib and car seat.

The only thing you cannot fudge is a car seat.

Swing - I recommend the fisher price papassan swing ... It swings left right and back and forth. Some babies like one motion over the other. It's expensive .... I found one used on Craigslist for $25. Best purchase for my dd. it was her fav place to be until 7 months.
Activity bar for the carseat
Bundle me type thing for the carseat and stroller.
Aside from the basic crib and car seat, you would also need a carrier and stroller ( I recommend the travel system)

also a baby bath

Boppy pillow (especially if you plan to breastfeed, I found it so much easier with my 3rd)
Breast pump and a lot of insurances will cover them if a dr gives a prescription
Nail clippers
Nose sucker (I always took the hospital one, they work so much better)
Baby wash and lotion
Towels and wash cloths
Diapers (cloth or disposable) and wipes
Baby power
Rubbing alcohol (umbilical cord) and Q-tips (baby ones).
A car seat cover (since our babies are due in Sept) This will cover the top of the car seat to keep baby warm and if you live in a area where it snows, it will keep snow off baby also.

Breast pads ( a MUST!)
nipple cream (if breast feeding)
over night pads or regular (which ever you prefer)
pampering bath salts, lotions and candles, FOR SURE! and relaxing music if you want

If I think of more I will post

I just wanted to say thanks for all these tips! i've been working on building our registry and am really trying to only register for what we need. We also have some space issues, as well as a tight budget. I figure if the registry only has one we need and not tons of unneccesary extras, hopefully we will get most of it? Also, at least then I can mentally prepare for what we will need to spend if we don't get any of it..
