i really want to try breast feeding this time round..

i didnt try it at all with ds and i really regret it, the reasons being my sister had a baby the year before and she tried breast feeding, and had to give up cos she was in tear with pain and her nipples we cracked and bleeding and that scared me, but sil had a baby last year and she is still breast fed. Although i am terrified of the same happening to to me, i really want to try it.

any tips or advice to get through it?

A good lactation consultant, lots and lots of patience, even more lanolin and know that it is probably the hardest thing you will ever do.

Seriously, it is very hard emotionally because of the lack of sleep, but sore nipples heal (I kept an aloe vera plant in my kitchen and broke a little piece off when they got really sore and kept them coated in lanolin the first couple of weeks).

There is a hormone rush when baby latches on and starts nursing that is like the coolest emotional high. I don't know any other way to describe it except that I felt so close to my baby during those times.

Kellymom is a great resource as well. And go into it knowing the beginning is so difficult. The nipples do need to toughen up but after the first few weeks it becomes a breeze! Try not to let anyone influence you.

There is a great natural gel called lanolin. I would definitely get some of it.

I have some of the same fears. I am pretty adamant on breastfeeding, and I hope that determination is enough to get me through the first few weeks.

Definitely check out kellymom.com! Cracked nipples will get better. Lanolin is great. I think you can also get gel pads that soothe irritated nipples. Do as much reading as you can- especially about cluster feeding. This is probably the hardest thing to overcome. You want to be sure the baby is producing enough wet and dirty diapers. As long as that is the case, try not to mistake cluster feeding for you not making enough milk. It is just baby's way of getting your body to make more to keep up with growth spurts. Also, don't watch the clock with breastfeeding. If baby wants to nurse an hour after eating, just go with it. If baby is still actively nursing for longer than 20 minutes, just go with it.
