So I'm pretty sure Lilah's latch is fine - the nipple looks a perfect shape when she's done nursing, no cracks or bleeding, her lips are flanged, upper lip curled down, she has the double chin when she's latched on. However, her initial latch on KILLS me - like I need to mentally prepare for the amount of pain I'm going to be in for the first 6-10 sucks....it's SO BAD. I'm pretty sure it's just because they need to toughen up, I've been putting Lanolin on them after every feeding.....anything else I can do? She fed almost every single hour last night, so today they are incredibly sore and feel bruised. Today she's going a few hours between feedings, so I'm getting a break, but I'm SO scared for the next time she nurses. My midwife is coming to check on us tomorrow, so she'll watch her latch on just to be sure it's a good latch, but she was latching great in the hospital.

Thank you Kiliki... for my adorable signature!

Same with me. In fact, I have a painful letdown too so combine it with that and OUCH! My left side is worse. But I've experienced no clogs and she is draining the breasts well...her latch appears fine. I'm at a loss. I'm hoping I just toughen up over time.

I think that just comes with the territory. Avery would bring tears to my eyes the first few weeks, but I promise it gets better. I didn't find anything that really helps except time. I couldn't even use the lanolin because she would spit it back out at me at just cry. Hopefully it gets better for you soon.

I agree, time will heal it as long as the latch is good. I was like that with my last child. I had to brace myself every feeding time and would cry because of the pain. It will get better.

I can relate. The worst was two nights ago and ge was cluster feeding like crazy. Ir was bruttle! But its gotten much better altho the initial latch is still toe curling. Everything ive read says it takes a good 2-3 weeks for your nipples to toughen up.
Expecting #3 in January 2016!

the first week or so was like that for me. i never bothered with lanolin, since there wasn't anything visibly wrong with my nipples (or the latch). the LC at the hospital coached me to relax my shoulders and take deep breaths... it was difficult, but it seemed to help. but yeah, seems to just come with the territory.

I wish I could help with a solution but I can't. At least it helps to know that there are lots of us in the same boat. It has gotten better in the last week or so but my let downs are painful also sometimes and that just sucks.

Same problem here. Latch is fine, but it just hurts like crazy when he first latches on, especially after cluster feeding. My sis recommended Second Skin burn patches. When she was nursing her first born a woman from La Leche League told her about them. They have helped me somewhat, it still hurts but they are soothing.
