I'm having trouble pinpointing when I should take my temp. Here's my dilemma:

I work everyday from 6:30-3p. I don't sleep very long when i know I have to work. For instance, I can go to bed at 9p, wake up at midnight, 1a, 2a, 3a, 4a, 5a, then 5:30 when i eventually get up. In the TCOYF book, it says that you need 3 good solid hours of sleep.

Should I then take my temp at midnight (or the first time i wake up) It may not be consistant which is why I have this dilemma in the first place.

What do you suggest? Or should I even take my temp at all?

I played with my temp and found that as long as I took my temp about the same time (I say 7 even though I might take it at 6:30 or 7:45 - and I never adjust for time) it was accurate. I also found that it didn't matter if I woke up earlier and stayed in bed and nursed my baby or whatever. And I found that it didn't matter if I took it before moving out of bed or if I took it while I was peeing (and so, since I always have to go as soon as I wake up, I choose to take it while peeing). In fact I found that I can go about my day for about 2 hours before my temp changes more than a couple tenths of a degree. Some women are more sensitive to being awake than others and TCOYF always goes by the most strict rules. If I were you I'd take my temp when you get up for the day. If the temps are all wacky then you'll know that won't work for you, but if they are relatively stable then you can go with it.

Do whatever you prefer! You do have the option of not taking them at all, but the form of charting described in Taking Charge of Your Fertility relies heavily on having the temperature sign...so you'd need to read up on a mucus-only method as well. If having the temperature data is important, then just give it a few cycles to see if your erratic sleeping patterns are interfering or not. Some women find that their temperatures are not affected by disturbances much at all, whereas others are very sensitive. Just try to take it when you get up for the day, as close to the same time each morning as possible.
