At the age of 4.5 my son started telling his sister exactly how he wanted to hurt in gruesome detail. That on top of his constant hyperness, unable to focus on anything, being impulsive to the point of hurting himself and others made me take him for evaluation. Our first step was the ped who said he had no clue and sent us to a specialist. After a 45 minute evaluation we came home with the diagnosis of ADHD and a prescription for Vyvance. The first day was great, the second he slept all day, the 3rd all hell broke loose and we weren't sure it was right. The 4th day was the day everything changed. He started seeing things and hearing things that weren't there. He was terrified of everything and it took 5 hours to bring him down from this flip out. I took him off vyvance and told the doctor never again. We started a new med 2 weeks later called tenex since choldodine did nothing for him. Within 2 weeks it was showing no help even after jumping his doses and amount of times. So we switched to Intuniv 2mg a day. It worked great everything was great, except his hypactivity was through the roof. So we added methylin to the mix but he couldn't sleep so added trazadone too. Added a morning dose of trazadone because he was cranky all the time and we seemed to find the right mix. Things improved for 2 months or so then he started with the visions and hearing things once again, along with the detailed explanations of how he was going to hurt family/friends. We changed from trazadone to risperidone to help with the hallucuinations and I saw a complete change in him. He was back to my loving lil boy who enjoyed activities again for once. We have had to up his meds last week and so far its been going great. The doctor is still calling him adhd but now that he is finally 5 I can find a new doctor and get a second opinion. The doctor has thrown out the possibility of schizophrenia or bipolar but says he is to young to even consider anything other then adhd at this point, yet has him on antispychotics at the age of 5. I am just ready for a second opinion and a full answer.

I just wanted to makes sure that you had at least one answer to your post, because I can just imagine how hard this is for you all.

I hope you can get a second opinion and the support you need!

I have 2 sons with adhd. They are 16 and 20. They never threatened or talked about harming a family member or friend.

It sounds like your current doctor is giving your son meds on top of meds just to overcome the side effects. I don't know your situation but I would get a second opinion - something does not sound right.
