I just wanted to share that my friend Kathy, the homeopath and post partum doula, had a successful NCB homebirth on 12/26/08. She was almost a full 3 weeks early. It's funny, she had been having some contractions and everyone was telling her and baby that they needed to wait until Wednesday 12/24/08 for her to reach 37 weeks or she couldn't remain home. Well, at around 1:00 am on Wednesday her water started leaking and her plug began to come out. Her contractions subsided but her midwife expected for the birth to happen later that evening.

Jump to Friday and she is still pregnant!!! Homebirth policy is that you are only allowed 72 hours from the time your water breaks to have the baby or else you have to go to the hospital for fear of infection. So just 2.5 hours before her 72 hour cutoff, she gave birth to 6lb 11oz, 19 inches long baby girl named Annabel Blue.

She was able to get her birth tub a day early (it was due to be delivered on Saturday) but although she labored in the tub and even started pushing there, she ended up giving birth on all fours on her bed. The water wanted to slow down her labor and with the time contraints she just couldn't let that happen.

I am very proud of her for achieving a NCB. Being a homeopath she wanted to have as little of drug intervention as possible, but she has never been a super gungho fanatic NCBer (like many of us are now - LOL) or anti Epi. She told me that while she's not ready to go out telling everyone they should have a NCB, she is glad she did it. Although she can now see why people get epi's. Interestingly, a long labor was one of her biggest fears and birthing in water was also super important to her. But although technically she was in labor for almost 3 days from the time her water broke, her real labor only lasted about 6 hours.

I have yet to see Annabel but have been sent pictures. I was supposed to go see her over the weekend once we returned from our trip, but DH is sick and I was feeling a lump in my throat so didn't want to bring that anywhere near baby. Baby lost a ton of weight after birth, so much that the Ped was encouraging her to take Annabel to Urgent Care. But with the guidance of her midwife and a marathon nursing day, Annabel gained back the weight she needed.

The best part of this whole story.....Stefan asked questions about how things will be done when we have our homebirth, as he knows "there's no way to talk you out of it now." YAY!!!! Man do I love my husband. Just a little over a year ago he thought I was crazy for thinking I wouldn't have an epi. Then he was okay with not being is a hospital but we had to at least be at a BC. Now he's supportive of a homebirth. Awesome!!!!

That is just so awesome!!!

When they persisted in questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, "Let the person among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her." John 8:7
