Hi there! I'm Sarah, and I'm pregnant with my first baby (boy) due 9/25. I'm not new to JM (I'm a host of the Sept DDC) but I am very new to natural childbirth. I know that DDCs are filled with tons of women with tons of opinions, and I'm reaching out to this board because I've been finding that attempting to dicuss natural childbirth often brings out a negative opinion.

I've been seeing a team of midwives throughout the pregnancy and I will be delievering at a hospital under their care in downtown Chicago. One of my good friends is currently undertaking her masters of midwifery, and working on becoming a doula. She's been a great resource for information for me. I've signed up for classes through a local company mostly housing doulas that focuses on natural birth. (In August). I'm sending DH to "Daddy Bootcamp" (haha) tomorrow, and I intend to also take a breastfeeding intensive class to help me with that.

I fear that I'm missing support though. My whole family lives far away, as does DH's family, and none of my friends have children yet. So anyways, it's time for me to join you lovely ladies, as I've found loads of support on JM when I've needed it before.

I just keep telling myself... "I can do this!"

You can do it! It sounds like you are doing great things to prepare so far. As long as you have DH for support you're good to go. Is your doula friend going to be with you during the birth? I imagine she would be a great help and support for you also. In addition to what you are already doing, I'm going to recommend reading Ina May's Guide to Childbirth. It has a lot of great NCB stories that will give you encouragement.

I think you sound very prepared! My personal experience I didnít need a lot of people leading up to and during the birth. Most of the support and stories I got were online and in books. Breatsfeeding was the only thing that I needed help with. Iím not sure if I could have done anything else to prepare for that.

It looks like you are doing all of the right things. Will your friend be helping you as your doula during the birth? Besides having your DH, that would be extremely helpful, especially since you already trust her so much.

Just because you don't have abundant of support IRL doesn't mean you won't be successfull. Just keep reading positive stories, gaining more knowledge about the benefits of NCB, and be selective about who you talk about NCB with so you are bombarded with negativity. And definitely hang out here more often. We're all here to support each other in any way possible.
