First time posting on JM, my name is Anjanette & I'm a doula-in-training!

I'm just curious about your opinions on doulas without heir won children? Would you hire one? Or not (can you elaborate please)? Thanks!

I've heard of that being the case before. I don't think I would feel comfortable hiring someone who hasn't been through it before. The fact that they have been there and know what I am feeling makes a big difference to me.

hello and welcome!!

the first doula i was matched with was young, maybe 26 or so and had no children. i didn't like her or the agency she was with. i'm glad she backed out. it wasn't her age or lack of children that i didn't like, but her whole outlook and definition of being a doula.

the doula i went with was great! a bit older,42 or so. i don't know if she had her own kids,it was never mentioned. she was super.

There are many doctors and very likely a number of midwives who have never had children. The experience is a definite asset but if they can do it, I'm sure you can too.

As for hiring one, I felt comfortable with the support I had from my Husband and Midwife. I think three would have been a crowd.

They've got to start somewhere

I think I'd give it a shot. I think I'm just as likely to not like a doula who has kids. I'm an equal opportunity grump though lol.

I'm all for giving it a try. Having the experience of your own childbirth is good, but if the doula knows different techniques to help a woman get through labor, the that's what is most important.

There is a 15 (she might be 16 not) year old Doula who has no kids. She is actually really good. Haven't had her since she's not in my country, but I've talked to her and have heard other women who have used her.

wow 15???

I wouldn't judge a doula on whether or not she has children.
