We started Jacob at 5.5 months, but he gave us sooo many cues that he was ready to start something more than just milk. I think we did almost 2 months of plain rice cereal before moving on. DS loved eating from a spoon and trying to feed himself. Very messy though . We did baby led weaning from there when it came to solids.

I agree that I think a lot of people get excited and rush things. If they want to get cereal and carrots spit back at them, let 'em. I for one, will wait until I see the signs that this next baby is ready, just like with DS. Might be 5ish months, might be 10!

Mine is like that too. I must say I was one of those anxious first timers with Lily. I started rice cereal at 4 months but was pretty lazy about it. It was suggested I try using rice cereal in a bottle at 8 weeks with Abri for her reflux. Since her weight gain was fine, I opted not to try the cereal. I didn't want to do anything to mess up my milk supply.

I never understood the rush. We wait until about 6 months to introduce solids (including cereal).

What I tell moms on the bfing board is that they are just curious, and sometimes just giving them utensils is enough to satisfy their curiosity. Also, making breast milk slushies out of frozen milk and spoon feeding it is another great option.
