I really want to use a Doula, but being that my Dh and I are both students and lower income I can't afford one. Does anyone know how or where I can get info to find a free or low-cost Doula? I have heard that sometimes if they are trying to become certified a trained Doula can offer low cost services. Anyway, just something I wanted to look into. Thanks for any advice you have.

I would check here

This website is for free to low cost doulas in the US to check out listings for clients in need and vice versa. Most of them are either in it for the passion and not the money or simply need to have a few more required births on their roster for certification purposes.

Another option would be to contact either DONA or CAPPA for doulas in training in your area who are in that same situation (needing births to fulfill requirements).

Let me know if those don't work and I can brainstorm some more.

Also - if youfind a doula - just ask her if shes willing to work with you even if she normally has a flat fee that is out of your range. Here, all of us doulas base it on income to make it affordable. We prefer to be paid by 36 or 38 weeks, but if someone lets us know that they cant do that and are willing to make a commitment, then we work with them.

MOST doulas arent in it for the money. The money just isnt there. Ive yet to meet one that could really make a living off of it, although we sometimes do rely on that money. So - check them out, meet with them even if you think theyre out of your price range. If you explain your situation, and espeically if you explain that youre dedicated, then most doulas are willing to work with you.

Now, personally - Id even do a birth for free if a mom realy needed it & was struggling. But, personally, Id be less likely to do it for a mom who didnt seem committed to taking responsibility over her birth. IF she was the "oh Ill just do whatever Im told by the dr - he always knows best" Id likely refer thme to someone else, I hate to say. Unless of course it was just a single mom or whoever that needed SOME kind of labor support person emotionally.

Point is - discuss it - check them out - you might be surprised

Thanks for the advice. I am never one to just take what the Dr says. And I am dedicated to going natural this time around and would love someone to be there as support with Dh. I am registered on bellywoman. I have only seen one Doula adversising in my area so I will give her a call. Thanks again, I will check it out.
