No we both are from English speaking families. I imagine that would be very difficult to try to learn a new language.

My IL's speak Spanish. Before I married DH, I knew this and so took 3 semesters of Spanish in college. While I'm uncomfortable speaking it, I do understand some of it. But when DH's parents start talking in Spanish in front of me, I can catch pieces of what they're saying. Either way though, I think it's really rude of them. If you want to talk privately, then go somewhere private.

Edited to add: they speak English as well, but if they ONLY spoke Spanish, I wouldn't find it rude, just frustrating.

His family speaks English, while mine speaks Spanish. Unfortunately MIL got 'offended' at MY baby shower when MY family was speaking Spanish and she couldnt understand! Hello!!!!!!!!!!!! Im Hispanic!!!!! AND we were at my Mothers house, who ALSO speaks Spanish!
