Hi all,
I have a very weird situation and even my doctors aren't sure how to proceed. I found out on July 3rd that we were pregnant. Multiple positive home tests over the next few days. My LMP was May 23rd but I have weird cycles and think I ovulated around June 18th.

On July 9th I started bleeding not quite as heavy as a period but still pretty regular with clots too. That night I also ended up in the ER with a gallbladder attack. My HCG was 44 and two days later it was 36. Since I was bleeding and my numbers dropped and an ultrasound didn't see anything, doctors assumed I was miscarrying.

The night of July 10th I ended up in emergency gallbladder removal surgery. After surgery I was pretty sick and pretty out of it. Lots of vomiting and nausea which was assumed to be because of my allergies to painmeds and anesthesia.

My bleeding stopped on the 17th and I just figured we would wait for my levels to drop and try again. I took a home test yesterday (18th) and got a very dark positive. I called my dr. because it seemed weird to be getting a darker positive than before I started bleeding. Has blood test yesterday and my numbers are up to a 76.

Dr. has no idea what is going on. I am going out of town and won't be back until the 31st when I am having another blood test and an exam. Any ideas? Thoughts? I have some pregnancy symptoms but the rational side of me knows still be pregnant is boarder line impossible....

the only thing that i can think of is the vanishing twin. If a woman is pregnant and carrying twins and miscarries one, the womans body doesn't actually realize that there is still a living pregnancy and will act as if there is not until the "twin" has passed out of her system, so hcg levels will fall and bleeding will happen. Then when the twin is out of the system, the body will realize its still pregnant and hcg will again begin to rise as ususal. I have NO experience with this personally so I am only writing to you what I have read. I have had four miscarriages though and never once did my hcg levels drop and then rise again. Once my tests started to lighten, they stayed that way all the way to bfn. Good luck to you.

My friend had this happen and I don't know if this is what is going on with you or not. Her levels were up then down then up again with bleeding and she had an ectopic pregnancy.

I'll be honest and admit it doesn't sound promising that you have a healthy pregnancy with numbers that are low and not increasing...but stranger things have happened. It is possible to ovulate more than once per cycle, so theoretically you could have lost an early pregnancy but then become pregnant again.

It could also be an ectopic or retained tissue or a cyst that is causing the positive tests. If you have any pain (especially on one side), I would get the ER asap as ectopics can be life-threatening.

Good luck and keep us posted. I hope your story has a very happy ending!
