My 8 mth old son takes Zantac (1mL dose) 3x a day. I started to wean him off of it last week by reducing his dosage times from 3 times a day to twice a day. Just last night he started really arching his back and putting his head up to the ceiling. Just this morning he did it again and it wasn't after eating. in fact he did it an hour after he woke up and before he was about to eat. (there wasn't a bottle or food in sight.).

normally I would think that yes, I need to up his dosage back to 3x a day as he's not ready to be weaned but to compound the issue, he's been sick since Saturday. up and down fever, coughing, constant runny nose so I'm not sure if the arching back could be attributed to that as well.
I'm still having a feeling it's the acid. I was so hoping to start weaning him.

Any thoughts?

Is your Dr helping you with this? We were told that our son needed to be on his meds until at least a year. If it were me, I'd up put his dosage back to 3x a day and try again in a few months. Good luck!

I would say if your serious about weaning him off, do it with a doctor supervision. And ride out the sickness. he could be reacting to feeling like poop or to the reflux. good luck

I agree. I tried weening my son off of Reglan the other day by reducing his dosage from 4x to 3x a day and it was horrible....seek the G.I or docs advice and supervision first. Also, I would wait until your son is not sick to do something like this. If he already doesnt feel well, then this might make it a bit worse. Good Luck.

It's been on the pediatrician's advice that I started weaning. I tried a month ago and it didn't work, so I tried again this month. Turns out my son had 2 ear infections, poor baby and he still has a little bit of a runny nose but he's been on amoxicillin for 7 days now and so far so good. no more arching the back and I'm still on the 2x a day Zantac dosage.

keeping my fingers crossed!!
