I gotta change my ticker... baby is 5 days old. I noticed this morning that she had spit up a couple times last night. Some of it had brown specks in it. I know my nipples were bleeding a little bit and I am wondering if this is what I was seeing?? Also, she spit up pretty big at one point and some of it was in my bra. When I changed it this morning there was a definite spot of blood in the area where she spit up and it was NOT a spot where my nipple could have touched. So I guess I am wondering if this is normal if she is swallowing some blood or if I should be worried that it is coming from her tummy etc. It hasn't happened again this morning and so far they have stopped bleeding.

We are having some problems with latching on. Her mouth is SO small. I am trying different positions to give me a break and it seems to be working. I got some good info yesterday on helping her latch on better and so far it has helped. Now I am just dealing with the damage done by her NOT latching on properly.

She probably did get a little blood from your nipple bleeding but thats ok. It wont hurt her at all

Now that you have the latch corrected (it wouldnt hurt to follow up with a LC too btw, and start attending LLL meetings), you should see a big improvement. If not, back to the LC & LLL

It sounds like the blood likely came from you. Another thing to watch is her diapers, to be sure she doesn't poop out any blood. That would indicate it is coming from inside her and not you.
Another trick to help your nipple heal is to express your milk after each feeding and let it dry. You can also use Lansinoh lanolin to keep it moist, so it doesn't bleed much.
