I am using lanolin after each feeding but is there anything I can do to repair cracked nipples? They are not bleeding but each one has a small spot where the nipple meets the areola and it is RIGHT where the baby puts her top gums each time. So... OUCH!!! Is there anything else I can do besides the lanolin? She is a week old today so they have been like this for about 5 days. Feeling a little better but I dont know if they are healing or not... they don't look like they are.

Cracks can take a while to heal, since your baby opens it again when she nurses. Within a few weeks it should be fully healed as long as any problems are taken care of, like a bad latch. A trick I learned was to express your own milk after each feeding and let it air dry. The antibodies will help it heal quicker and keep it from getting infected.

I feel for you. Mine were cracked for almost 5 weeks.. and it took alot to get them healed. I alternated positions, used lanolin (switched brands also), used nipple shields for a bit, and even exclusively pumped for 3 days and fed my baby a bottle only for those days. It finally healed everything up!
Best of luck to you.. i hope you hang in there. Once they heal up.. it is an amazing experience once you get past the issues.

Thanks ladies!!! I am hoping the fact that they don't hurt as much means they are healing finally. We finally got the latch problem solved. I am having to feed her in football hold most of the time which I hate, but it is the easiest way for me to see what is going on and it is most comfortable (since the cracks happened in the cradle hold) I have thought about pumping for a little while, but I HATE pumping, lol. I had NO problems what so ever with my last baby so this is aggrivating. I had so much trouble with my first that I quit after 3 weeks. I am hoping to go at least until August with this one until I go back to work.

my Lactation Consultant had me wear Medela Gel Pads (or Soothies) instead of using the Lansinoh and they worked a little faster (like 4 days or so).

I use the lanolin and let breast milk dry. Hope they are feeling better and heal soon.
