I'm usually in the September 2011 playroom or Large Families, but I have a quick question.

First, I'll say I've never charted, used ovulation kits, etc. We just dtd and accepted if I got preggers or not.

We have six children, the youngest being 8 months. I've had a touch of the baby bug again, but I am not sure that I really want another baby, or if I'm just sad over how fast the last 8 months have gone. DH says he doesn't want to have more, but he's said that since baby 2 and well, we have six.

I'm not comfortable permanently altering my body by getting my tubes tied. Pretty sure I'll regret that decision, and DH doesn't want to get the V done, and neither of us will pressure the other to get it done because we both feel that it's a personal choice. Nor do either of us like putting hormones in our body, ie the pill,

Ok so now my question - women use ovulation kits all the time to know when they should dtd. In that aspect, couldn't a woman also use them to know when it's NOT a safe time to dtd?? I just want to know if I could do this - or am I just being stupid?

OPK's will turn positive a few days after the cervical mucus begins. Sperm can live in mucus up to 5 days. So using OPK's alone doesn't given enough advance warning before ovulation to avoid pregnancy.

However, modern forms of NFP are highly effective. As effective as the Pill, higher effectiveness than the IUD, and much more effective than using OPK's alone. Come on over to the NFP/FAM board if you want to learn more.
