I just noticed your question has been up for a while, so I'll give you a bit of information about the two kinds of IUDs...:

The ParaGard (Copper T 380A) contains copper and can be left in place for up to 12 years.

Mirena IUD continuously releases a small amount of the hormone progestin, and is effective for five years, though I believe most doctors (at least mine) only suggests leaving it in for three years.

Hope that helps.

I just wanted to add that IUD's stand for intra-uterine devise.

They are as effective as sterilization yet when you wanna get pregnant you just get it taken out. If you don't wanna get pregnant then you can just keep it in until it's time to get it taken out.

Here is a link for the Mirena. It's the 5 year hormone releasing one.

Here is the Paragard link. This is the one that I have. It's good for 10 years. It's copper and has no hormones.

Thanks girls I remember my doc gave me a pamplet about it but I was scared to get it. But after reading the info that sounds like the best way to go. Thanks girls, I should of gotten it when I had insurance but we'll see how much it costs.
