that my neighbor would come to me asking about how she can homeschool. She is really sweet. She is Jewish, from Israel and has two boys 4 and 2. She is the sweetest person and will bend over backwards for you. Anyway, when my other neighbor used to live here, and was homeschooling her boys, she always said there is no way she could do it, they need the socialization, etc. and today she asked me to tell her how she can do it. She is going to be moving to California eventually and she said the schools she wanted would be too expensive and she didn't want to send them to ps. Plus she said she wanted to teach her youngest Hebrew- the oldest is fluent, but she is afraid the younger one is learning only English. I suggested she could see if there were national Jewish support groups that might help and she is afraid they would all be very orthodox and that would be their reason for hs. I don't think so, I would bet there are many non-orthodox Jewish homeschoolers who do it for the education too. Anyway, when people ask me honest homeschool questions because they want to know, I love it. However, if they ask when we are in a group of other ps, it makes me nervous because I don't like to say things that the other parents don't like or make them think I am applying it to them. Also, it seems inevitable that the other parents will make the same comments that you hear constantly about 'I knew a weird homeschooler' or 'what about socialization?' I think I handled it well and answered the best I could in front of the other parents. Well, just wanted to share my surprise. You never know who will come up to you and ask you about who was once against the idea.

I'm glad you were there to talk to her about it. It may be her personality meshes better with yours or as her kids get older she's looking into other options especially worrying about her move and losing Hebrew.

I love it when someone asks me about homeschooling when I never thought that they would. Last night, we were discussing how many people are now considering it since we first started. It makes me happy that I am now on this end of it...able to mentor and help those just beginning. It seems like only yesterday that I first started and now I have three years of it behind me...wow..time flies when you are having fun !!!

That is so great! I am glad you were there for her. Don't be afraid to say what you think. You are right, some people may not like it, but you have every right to your own opinion. You aren't requiring them to agree.
