Jamie made it safely to the CBP (customs and border protection part of the Dept. of Homeland Security - that's who he works for) office at a military base in LA. He was able to e-mail me from his blackberry to tell me he is there so that's a good sign that the networks are up and everything. He'll be there at least until this weekend and possibly longer than two weeks. He has to set up the phones and make sure they stay up and running.

I am sure that is a HUGE relief to you Heather. Hope he has a safe trip home as well and hope he doesn't have to stay as long as beyond two weeks!

I'm glad to hear he made it safely there. Hopefully he'll be able to get home sooner rather than later.

Glad he made it safe. I hope that he won't have to be there longer than planned. It looks like Gustav calmed down a little before he hit.

Even though Gustav calmed down and all the regular phone system still isn't working. They have IP phones that can get through anyway, though, and that's why he's there. I can't call him. All circuits are busy. He can call me on his system. Pretty nifty actually, but Chertoff and others have to be able to reach certain people no matter what such as President Bush. So as long as that needs to be there he has to stay (unless someone else can come down halfway through and take his place).

I'm glad he's safe and able to keep in contact with you. Hopefully he won't have to be gone the entire 2 weeks.

Jamie's coming home soon! YAY!!! We don't know exactly when. Likely Friday or Saturday. The CBP offices made it through the hurricanes very well. Another guy got there this afternoon and he and Jamie just need to start weaning everyone off the IP phones and back on to the regular phone systems. I am really looking forward to him being home. Last week he was in Baltimore for a conference Sunday through Thursday and then he had to go to Louisiana on Monday. This means we will likely be able to do our planned weekend away after all (though it looks like we will be very wet because of Hurricane Hanna). He has another thing to go to later this month but we're going with him to that one. Funny thing is he usually only has to travel once, maybe twice, a year and this is three in a row. Could be 4 since there's a training thing in WI at the end of the month but he doesn't have to go to that and said after all this he won't. He wants to spend time with him family for a while before traveling again.
