I am not so much of a workbook homeschooler. My mom was and I often saw that it became more harmful than good with us. There are times when things get crazy and an occasional workbook might be needed, but my mom towards the end would get too used to using them. Anyway, for some reason I bought DD a kindergarten workbook a long while ago and put it up on a shelf and totally forgot about it. We haven't needed it and have been having more fun without it. Well, the other day DD found it and got so excited and wanted to do it. So I said sure and she did it for two hours straight. Course she wanted to skip all over the place in the book and at first I was thinking- well she should finish each page at a time- and then my non-conformist attitude stepped in and was soon telling her to do whatever one she wanted.

Everything in it is pretty normal. Identify the objects that start with these letters, telling time. Some of it she had trouble with, like telling time, but most everything else was fine. Then I am looking at how many "circle or cross out the one that is different" pages there are. I know that concept can be used in math, but for some reason it bugs me. Like no one should be different. Then I hit a page that made me so irritated I ripped it out. "Cross out the picture of the kid that is not following school rules." One of the kids is whispering to another, the other one is wiping the chalkboard, the other is running in the halls and the other one is sitting quietly at their desk with their book open. So the one who is running, like kids do, but CAN'T in school is BAD- CROSS them OUT! And the one that is SOCIALIZING in class- CROSS them OUT! Oh, but the one who helps the teacher and the one who sits in his desk for hours on end like a little drone, those are the ones we circle. Just bugged me. Like Max Lucado's book about stars and dots. We sure do teach them early don't we! If I find any more irritating pages- out they go! I just LOVE workbooks!

I know just what you mean. I'm not much into workbooks either, although it seems lately we are doing more of them. What I really want to do is read historical living books, study art and do fun projects. But until we have down at least some basic maths and Sarah shows an interest in longer books we will keep plodding on the workbooks or little games I guess.

Lol about that page! Yep schools are after conformity, they have to, to control so many kids. Good idea to rip it out!

The socializing can't be wrong. It's what school is all about! Isn't it?
