What were you doing when you heard about the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001?

It was still the first year of our marriage and I was still getting adjusted to being a stay at home wife. I slept in a lot those days. Well, I always listen to the radio when I'm sleeping, I can't sleep if it's quiet. Well I woke up and only heard talking on the radio. Nothing it was saying was really registering. I thought it somehow got switched to AM. So I simply got up and turned the radio off. I turned on the television and the news was saying that plans hit the world trade towers. And then all the sudden they were showing footage of the first tower coming down. It was kind of surreal, waking up and the world being completely changed.

I had a new baby (Jared) and had gotten up to take care of him and just put him back to sleep. I was getting ready to enjoy a quiet peaceful morning because Jared had gone back to sleep and Jack hadn't waken up yet. I turned on the TV to watch Little House on the Prairie and all the channels were talking about it and showing footage. At first, I was totally confused about what was going on. Then it really hit me what it all meant and I called my sister and told her she needed to turn on her TV and see what was going on. We both just sat there not saying a word, keeping each other on the line, watching what was happening.

I was 8 1/2 months pregnant with Cameron and my mom, Ani, and I went to see the back-up OB that morning. I had switched to the midwife at the birthing center a few days before and had to see the back-up OB to rule out anything that would prevent me from having a birthing center birth. We had been chatting away in the car and didn't have the radio on. We got to the OB's office to find everyone staring blankly at the TV that was on in the waiting room. The first plane had hit about 2 minutes before we got there. At that point it was assumed to have been a small plane and an accident. I was in with the OB when the second plane hit. When I came out my mom told me what had happened. The plane had hit the Pentagon by the time we got to my house. We sat the rest of the day watching the TV. We lived in southern MD at the time and Jamie worked on the Navy Base. He was off base when it happened at a training thing. The base was closed immediately to everyone except key personnel once it was known these were terrorist attacks. It stayed closed for a couple days after that.

I was teaching highschool math. One of my students was disruptive and tried to hit me. I took him up to the resource officer in the office. Everybody was standing around the TV. At first, I thought they were watching a movie.

I was 7 months pregnant with Sarah and thought I would watch Oprah. I flicked from one channel to the next kind of confused at what I was seeing. Then realized what I was watching had actually happened over in America and all the channels were airing it. I ran, lol waddled out to the window and yelled to Steve out in his locksmith van to come and see. It was very surreal yet horrifying at the same time.

I was living in Illinois but visiting my now husband (then boyfriend) and his family here in Georgia. September 9th was the first flight I had ever been on and I had to fly back home on September 23rd. I woke up and went upstairs and saw what was all over the tv. It took us about 5 minutes to realize that Aaron's (my DH) dad was on a business trip to New York and had clients that he was seeing that morning in the trade centers. Luckily for him God had worked in a really odd way. September 10th he went to the airport and his flight was delayed 6 hours. He got into his hotel so late that he decided to sleep in on the morning of the 11th and he rescheduled his clients for the afternoon. Had his flight not been delayed he might not be here today. It took us over an hour to reach him that morning to make sure he was ok.

On my flight back from Georgia on the 23rd I was seated next to this Indian guy which didn't bother me until he looked at me and asked "Are you nervous?". I shook my head and said that I was fine and in my mind I was screaming "SHOULD I BE???" Kind of scary!

Reilly was 15 months old and I was sitting on the floor in front of the TV, getting my shoes on so we could go for a walk. I had the Today show on and saw the first reports of the first plane hitting. I called my husband to tell him what happened (while they still thought it was an accident) and was on the phone with him when the second plane hit. I remember saying, "Oh, man, something just blew up!", thinking that it was just an explosion from the first plane. Then everyone realized what it was. I kept calling him throughout the morning, as things happened, and was also talking to him when the first tower collapsed.

Such a surreal day.

I was 4 months pregnant with Declan, Noah was at school, Eric at work and I was also at work. I was a waitress and I swear it was one horrible day.. we heard about it all, then we had a regular customer have a heart attack in the parking lot, I was already having pregnancy issues, this was not helping. I was a wreck..I wanted to go get Noah, I just had this horrible feeling I would never get to actually have the baby inside of me and hold him..never mind have more. There was such an air of dread.

I was home sleeping. I had one of my migraines and called into work. My brother called me when the first plane hit and told me to turn on the news and I was watching when the second hit. I was totally clueless about what was actually happening and it was very surreal. It's really a haunting feeling. My heart really goes out to everyone that was involved. I can remember not wanting to go to work b/c I worked downtown and I was just petrified that all of the attacks weren't over.
