Hey guys!
I am a member of the Jan 10 and Aug 11 play rooms. I have never been to this board before, but I have a question for a friend, and I thought some of you may know the answer.

She is an adult, and she is in her last semester of college, but the school is telling her she cannot graduate until she gets the whooping cough vaccine. She does not want to get this vaccine. I know this board is about not vaccinating your children, but is anyone familiar with an opt out for adult vaccines in the state of Texas?

I'm not sure about Texas so, I can only comment on my own experiences. I used to work in healthcare and every employee of the hospital is given the flu vaccine every year (I know it's not whooping cough but, still, it's a vaccine) I always refused it. I had to sign a waiver each time but, they couldn't FORCE me to get it, couldn't hold my paycheck over my head until I got it, etc. She should be able to waive it. I would think they'd gladly hand over her diploma just to get a scary unvaxed student out of their school!

Mom to 4 beautiful kids! 3 on Earth and 1 in heaven. Our little girl, Matilda Hope had Down Syndrome. She was born with TMD, a disease that is like leukemia. She fought that and beat it. Then, she had liver failure. She beat that, too. On October 17, 2014 she had NEC, necrotizing enterocolitis. My baby went to Heaven on October 19, 2014. She lived exactly one month.

I can't see the wisdom in them saying she can attend classes but not receive her diploma. This isn't some unpaid fine that she needs to get done while they can still hold it over her head. I've never heard of such a thing. She should be able to opt out via waiver, but I can't fathom it is legal to withhold her earned degree because they want her to comply with a medical decision. It isn't ethical & it shouldn't be able to stand up legally. Even in lower school s- like high school - they can not allow you attend classes without proper waivers, they can't withhold your earned diploma over it though.
