'The View' to feature triplets birthed by grandmother in 2004; father is from Hampton - Daily Press

HAMPTON — Friday's episode of ABC's national talk show, "The View," will feature a 1993 graduate of Kecoughtan High school whose mother-in-law acted as a surrogate for his and his wife's triplets.

Jason Hammond, son of Hampton residents Gary and Pamela Hammond, will appear on the 11 a.m. show with his wife Camille. Also appearing is her mother, Richmond resident Tina Cade, who carried the triplets for her daughter at age 55.

At the Wednesday taping in New York, Pamela Hammond and her husband sat in the audience with the 6-year-old triplets, boys Aaron and Kai and girl Simone. Hammond said the show focuses on surrogacy, and the family was interviewed for about 6 minutes.

Cade delivered the triplets by Cesarean Section in December 2004 at Bon Secours St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond. The story garnered international attention and sparked debate about reproductive technology.

Pamela Hammond said her son and daughter-in-law initially declined Cade's offer to do so, then agreed after six unsuccessful in-vitro fertilization treatments. The story is a continuous part of their lives, Pamela Hammond said, partly because of a foundation set up in Cade's name that so far has provided 22 grants up to $10,000 for couples who need fertility treatments. Sixteen have had babies, she said, and two are expecting.

"We just think it was such a blessing to get the triplets in the first place," Pamela Hammond said.

The trio lives near Baltimore, Maryland with their parents.
