i just don't understand the whole "the hospital won't allow me to have a VBAC" thing, pretty much no hospital here will "let" you, but they also can't turn you away. do you think it's just a scare tactic that works and eliminates how many woman actually try...cause i will sue them so fast if they make me go outside to have a baby LOL which i know honestly they won't do.

I have a friend who had a Csection for her first (breech) and then two natural vbacs, and with her fourth the new hospital she lived by wouldn't allow a vbac. They *tried* driving the two hours (I think it was two hours) to her old hospital, but he ended up being born in the van about 5 minutes away.

There was a story a few months back posted either here, the natural childbirth board or labor and childbirth board... anyway, it was about a woman who was having a homebirth but wanted to be checked at the hospital (she lived really close) and then wanted to return home. Well one of the doctors ended up insisting she needed help but she left anyway. A police officer showed up at her door with a court order, took her into custody and then took her to the hospital for a forced c/s where they put her to sleep to do it. Stories like that are what worry me most about situations like yours. That poor woman was completely helpless and forced into a c/s against her will all because she just went to the hospital to get checked. If I were in your situation (and I know Im not, so these are just my thoughts ), I would be so scared of being forced into something even after protesting and fighting (it would be awful to have to fight for your wishes in the midst of labor anyway) like the woman in the story. That is the big reason I went with a homebirth for myself even without the VBAC issues you are facing. I feel for you! I know it has to be tough in your situation and I hope you get the birth you want!

the insurance companies are the ones disallowing the OBs to okay vbacs. Accidental/too late vbacs cant be helped. But it depends on your OB practice and the hospital. The hospital in my hometown in IL is no longer allowing vbacs either.

There is a post which I am always referring people to which explains some of the points of EMTALA - a piece of federal legislation stating that a woman who goes to any hospital in active labor cannot be turned away and must be treated according to her wishes until the baby and placenta are delivered.

"I trust birth—not birth attendants—for if you only trust birth that is attended then you really don't trust birth at all. You trust the attendant. And then you start over. Who? Doctor, surgeon, CNM, CPM, SIM? And it goes on and on...." - Carla Hartley

Steph, thanks for bringing up EMTALA. That's what I was going to mention as well.

Ideally, every woman could choose the birth that best suits her, but in reality, there's a lot of fear-mongering and politics surrounding birth .
