So at my appointment tonight my midwife gave me two tubes of herbs. One called "caulophyllum thalictroides" and the other "simicifuga racemosa." I didn't really think anything of it, but I googled it and found out it was black and blue cohosh!

I have read this is unsafe and I am shocked she would give it to me and not tell me what it really was! I don't know if it was an oversight since we were a little distracted by the kids tonight, but I had not planned on taking this and really don't know all that much about it, except that some people say it is a last stitch effort. I am only 38w, 2d. It's not like I'm overdue yet.

Any thoughts or has anyone ever used this before? I think I should probably call her and ask her more about it.

You can call & get more info. They can be unsafe if used improperly or in the wrong form. However, its not uncommon for midwives to recommend very small amounts in the weeks before your due date. They arent given in the same way or dosage as they would to induce labor.

Most often mw's give them around 38-40 weeks to help with toning the uterus - much like red raspberry leaf tea. Towards the end of my pg i was taking alfalfa, nettle, red raspberry leaf, and an antenatal blend that included small amounts of black & blue cohosh among a few other things.

I would definitely give her a call and express your concerns and find out why she gave them to you now. I was given some herbs this morning to try and get a stalled labor moving again but I'm not sure what all the ingredients were (I'm 41+ weeks now).

I'd call and talk to her. Blue and black cohosh are perfectly safe in used properly and under the supervision and direction of a midwife. However, they shouldn't be used before the due date and really only when you need to get the baby out and the other option is medical induction.

Ditto all the others - I hope you've talked to her and gotten some answers now. Let us know what you decide to do!
