Does anyone know anything about kava kava?

Just saw my midwife tonight, who was concerned that my blood pressure was elevated...no surprise, since I've been stressed about a number of things lately. She immediately told me to get some kava, and actually had some with her that she gave me. I took one while she was still here, and my blood pressure was back down to its normal range within about twenty minutes. So, great!

Of course...after she left, I just had to look it up online and read more about it. And every site I looked at said that it was NOT to be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. But they didn't say why not, and that's what I want to know!

I'm wondering if it's one of those things that might not be good for the *duration* of a pregnancy but won't hurt anything toward the end...I am 40w2d already, after all. And I was wondering about using it during breastfeeding, especially if it helps me to chill out a little...but I can't find any great info about it.

Does anyone know, or can anyone point me in the right direction to read something *useful* before I run out and buy more?

Almost everything you read online about herbals will say not to use during pregnancy. Even the herbs that I bought specifically for the last five weeks of pregnancy and for birth said not to take during pregnancy without a doctors ok. It's just for liability purposes. I don't think that your midwife would lead you astray, and if you honestly think that she would you wouldn't be birthing with her.
