Well, it didn't go as well as I'd hoped. He dropped from 25% in weight to 9% and from 50% to 30% in length, which doc says is too much of a drop. We started rice cereal yesterday and will add one new food every 1-2 weeks (to check for allergic reaction). We have to go back in a month for a weight check, which we haven't had to do since he was brand new. He still hasn't kicked the cough and doc said his nose looks "booger-y" (thanks for that technical term doc!), so he's back on antibiotics and we've added an antihistimine*. (*side note: who in the world thought it was a good idea to make infant meds blood red?!?! We're gonna stain everything he owns because he spits up all the time. )

So he's not growing enough and he's still sick. The only good things are that his little brain is still growing nicely (up from 94% to 97%!) and he's ahead developmentally. But overall I'm a bit down from the appointment. I guess we'll know more in a month at the re-check. He didn't say what would happen if he's still not gaining.

Kathryn, I'm sorry. That must have been a downer to hear, and I'm sure you're worried. Hopefully he'll kick the bug and chunk up again. If it makes you feel better - he's still winning the RPL playroom noggin contest! 97%??? We go next week, but I don't think we can beat that.

Hang in there...

Just wait, little ones have a way of catching up suddenly. You'll see, pretty soon you'll have a hulk on your hands (just in time for him to get up and start walking!).

OK, I dug out Ben's paperwork from his 6 month checkup. Ben was only 1.25 oz heavier than Alex is and was in the 20%. So I'm a bit more relieved now. And Alex LOVES his cereal (has to be nice and thick, none of that runny baby stuff for him, oh no!), so it shouldn't take long to bulk him up a bit more.

Rhonda, your post made me laugh. Before the appointment, we were already joking that Ben would be our quarterback and Alex would be the linebacker!

Sorry to hear he's having issues with gaining weight but since he's been ill it's hard for a little guy to gain weight and fight the nasty bug. I'm sure he'll catch up in no time. What a cutie he is!
Thank you Claire1977 for my adorable siggy

Kathryn - first off I am so sorry this has you so concerned. Firstly I want to ask if your Dr is using a growth chart for BF babies. It is different than for FF babies & many times Dr's use the same chart for both & make BF moms feel their babies aren't growing as they should - when in fact they are right on schedule. Secondly - I don't put much stock in growth charts - I really don't. If the baby has no real health issues - meaning good color, good energy, appropriate wet/dirty diapers then I say don't sweat it. I quite literally think they worry too much these days about averages.... I had a sister that today no doubt would have been diagnosed with failure to thrive, but they never did anything besides comment that she was a bit on the small, thin side & she grew JUST fine - in fact she ended up taller than me...and I was a big baby...so who knows? I hope your next visit brings you better feelings about all of it & I say he is soooo cute & looks like a very healthy little guy, I wouldn't put too much stock in it. If they were truly worried that something of note was happening, they would be ordering tests.
