My c-section was scheduled for Monday, November 5th. I was 38 weeks 1 day, and both my doctor and I were pleasantly surprised that I had carried Mercy to full term. But we did it! My mom was with me during the surgery, and even though it ended up being a little longer than expected due to scarring from my previous section, it all went very smoothly. So that's the boring part: I laid there for a while, my mom held my hand and eased my fears, my incredible doctor took good care of me, and into the world came Mercy RoxAnne at 4:52pm, weighing 8 pounds 3 ounces. Her Apgars were 8 and 9, and she was more perfect than I could have hoped.

But the interesting part, as far as I'm concerned....

God, I didn't know. She's my fifth child, and I don't know if I forgot, or if I've been through something totally different this time, but I didn't know. I didn't know that one tiny little person could instantly make my world good again, and I didn't know that giving birth for the fifth time would make me want to get on my knees and thank God for the chance to do it. She has such wise, thoughtful eyes, and when she looks at me it's like she has faith that I would do anything at all for her. She has restored my faith that love does win, no matter what. She showed me that I fell in love with her father for a reason; that even through all the pain and betrayal and loss, while he showed me no mercy, he gave me Mercy. She came into my world and taught me how to forgive him and let him go forever. She has brought me closer to my family and reminded me of how precious all of my children are. She has renewed my ambition to give all of them the best life I can and to be a better mother every day than I was the day before. She truly has made my world good again.

So, for Mercy and me, our story is not just about the birth of a beautiful baby girl, but also the re-birth of a mommy who needed mercy -- and Mercy -- more than she ever knew.

"Much that we call evil is really good in disguises; and we should not quarrel rashly with adversities not yet understood, nor overlook the mercies often bound up in them." ~ Horace Mann

I never comment on birth stories although I read them all the time. Your story, however, was so moving to me that I felt the need to say you are awesome. Your children are as blessed to have you as a mother as you are to have them as your rock.
