Does your child have any signs that he or she has adapted so that it is easier for them to do? Has he or she made up any signs?

She signs butterfly kind of backward... She crosses her hands in front of her and flaps them-- it looks almost like 'spider' except she flaps her hands instead of wiggling her fingers.

Every time we think she's made up a sign for something we go to teach her the real one and discover that she is using the correct sign, lol.

Jonah has adapted a lot of the signs.. almost all of them. His speech and occupational therapists are a little perplexed by this, because some of them he *should* be able to do, like "thank you" and "please"

The cutest one that he has adapted is "banana" He holds his thumb and rubs it back and forth. It took me FORever to figure out what he was doing! I thought he had eczema on his hand LOL He'd give me this look as I was putting lotion on his thumb like "what are you doing? I want a piece of fruit, not lotion!"

Bella signs "sing" but instead of rolling her finger, she repeatedly touches her lips.

Also when she signs "friend" she folds all four fingers over each other instead of just the index fingers.

I still show her the correct way to do the sign and figure that she will slowly learn. I think its probably like talking, they don't always pronounce it right to start with but over time learn how.

Mine hasn't altered her signs on purpose, I think it has more to do with her motor skills.

We have a dvd with the ABC signs. So she is watching this and can identify the ABC signs, but when she does it...ITS TOO FUNNY. She can't physically do it. Although, we tell her she's "So good"..LOL

She has made up her own signs. She realized around 12months old that there was a sign for everything, so she would make up signs. My sister would play, "Ring around the tree" and she made her own sign for this.".
