I've been trying to teach Jonah the signs for "mom" and "dad" for a lonnnnng time now. He hasn't really cared too much to use them. Well, with the new baby on the way, I've been reading him a lot of books about different people in the family- mommies and daddies and brothers etc. I wanted to at least try to explain to him that he's going to be "brother" and he really seems to understand books.

Something he's been doing lately is trying to tell us verbally what books he wants. He has a sound for "brown bear, brown bear" and he will say "Daggy" for the daddy book etc. Well we have a mommy book, and he brought that book to me tonight and started tapping his chest. I said "That's the Mmmooommmmy book. Say mmmmmooooommmm" and he said "Momom" and tapped his chest again, and was really proud of himself! I realized, I've been so focused on labeling who's mommy, and who's brother, and who's daddy etc, that now he thinks the sign for mommy is tapping his chest (I tap my chest to indicate that I'm the mommy, and point to him to indicate that he's the brother)

LOL that's a cute story. How old is he?

I don't think you taugh him the wrong sign...It could be that he's only picking up on the identification part.

My little one ( 21 months) has realized that there is a sign for everything and makes up her own signs..It's a bit frustrating. I don't always understand her. LOL

Jonah is also 21 months! Yes, he is realizing too that everything has a sign, and it takes me forever sometimes to figure out what the heck he is "talking" about LOL but once I figure it out, I'm usually pretty glad that he has a sign for it

Lol! Rebecca picked up an incorrect sign courtesy of her grandmother (argh), and it took us three weeks to teach her the right one! I think he'll pick up the right one eventually though-- it at least makes sense why he's signing what he is!
