CDC: Number of new cases of influenza A (H1N1) decreasing

The CDC data showed that "widespread illness" from influenza A (H1N1) is now being reported in 32 states, the fewest since the beginning of the pandemic's fall wave. Furthermore, hospitalizations related to influenza A (H1N1) have decreased for the third week in a row. Some public health officials are saying these data may indicate that the fall wave of influenza A (H1N1) has peaked.

CDC officials also announced that an estimated 70 million doses of the influenza A (H1N1) vaccine are now available and the supply is expected to increase even more in the next few weeks.

Thomas Frieden, MD, MPH, director of the CDC, said the decrease in the number of cases, along with the increase in the number of available vaccines, now presents a "window of opportunity" to further protect Americans from influenza A (H1N1).

"We are far from out of the woods, but we have an opportunity to get more people protected in case there is another surge or wave [of cases] in future months," Frieden said at a press conference today.

Do you regret getting the vaccine? Do you regret NOT getting the vaccine? Any other thoughts you'd like to add?

None of us have gotten vaccinated, no regrets. I'm pretty sure I had H1N1 a month or so ago (no one could definitively diagnose, the tests are expensive and they don't send them out routinely) but it really wasn't that bad. Definitely less horrible than a normal flu.

Was the poll in relation to the report of decreasing cases of H1N1? I just assumed the decreased number of cases was related to increased numbers of vaccinated people?

I'm sure many people (including the CDC) would like to believe that.

To the bolded, we have lots of information showing that the CDC was inflating the numbers because they weren't testing.

(I am glad to hear you thought it was less horrible than the normal flu.)

Is there information suggesting that is or is not the case? Or we don't know because they stopped testing for it?

I got the vaccine and I do NOT regret it. If I can protect myself from getting it (and therefore NOT pass it to my newborn niece), why wouldn't I?

We never got it. I don't regret not getting it. I will if my DD or I get it and has complications, but I would have the same regrets if we got it and something happened. I weighed out the best of two evils, and I came to the decision to trust our immune systems. So far, so good. Now I have to knock on wood.

Was there an option for not regretting being vaccinated- I only see regrets for getting it or not getting, nothing for not regretting getting it. I got it and don't regret it.

I may have mis-read the options, but I don't think there was a category for me.

I got it, and don't regret it. I'm pregnant, and I was able to get the adjuvant free. In my area of B.C., there have been quite a few deaths, particularly of women in their 20s and 30s.

I also had the understanding that part of the reason that the "wave" was starting to be over was due to the high number of vaccinated people (about 30% as of this week, in Canada), as well as other factors related to the large amount of publicity (ie. people being more careful with washing hands, not going to work when sick, etc. because of the widespread public health campaign urging them to do so.)

Good question. Neither me nor my son got the vaccine and no regrets...yet.

Yeah, I also voted other as I saw no option for getting it without regret.

That's exactly how I feel about it. I voted other.

*nod*

I was told that all people who presented with flu symptoms were being "diagnosed with H1N1." They were not testing to differentiate between any kinds of other viruses that could have been at fault for the illness. That would most definitely inflate the numbers-and some of those deaths (which are fewer than with the seasonal flu, btw) were from who knows what because of them not testing everyone!

I voted it wasn't an option. I do not regret NOT getting the vaccine. I did a ton of research and finally just asked my PCP and OB, both said there was no reason to get it and getting it being pregnant wasn't the smartest choice I could make.

If your state doesn't have one that's mercury free then your OB is one of the smartest OB's I've heard of, IMO.
