Be respectful to other debaters. Debate the topics at hand, not the person with whom you disagree.

Do not bump old threads that are 3 or more pages back. If it's been that long since we talked about an issue, go ahead and make a new thread.

Be prepared to defend what you post. If you post an opinion or something anecdotal that's fine, but understand that someone else will probably come along with facts to oppose your opinion. If you are presenting something as fact, it might be helpful to post links to reliable sources to back up what you are saying.

This is not an advice and support board. If you post topics about your actual life asking people's input and opinions on a situation, be prepared to get answers you might not like.

Don't "hit and run." If you start a topic, stick around until it fizzles out. If you make statements and someone replies to you, reply back. Just like in real life.

Be careful to not abuse the "report post" button. Make sure the post you are reporting breaks actual site rules and is not just a retaliation against a person. Also, if you are not a regular member of the board and/or are not familiar with us, what might appear to be an attack on someone could just be someone's debating style.

Spelling, punctuation, and grammar are very important. You want people to take you seriously. Text speak should be used as abbreviations that accentuate a post, not the entire body of your post.
On the other hand, if a person's incorrect spelling or grammar is the only thing you can comment about, that falls under the first guideline of debating the topic at hand and not the person you disagree with.

As heated as these debates may become, the goal should be to enjoy ourselves. Remember, we are not fighting. You should strive to inform and educate people, not cut them down.

It might be a good idea to lurk for a week or two before you actually post in debates so you can get a feel for how things work. As soon as you're ready and you're wearing your big girl panties, jump in! We look forward to having new members with new thoughts and ideas.

Welcome to the Heated Debates!
