What are your thoughts on the Marquis de Sade? Was he liberated or just a pervert?

Hollywood paints a picture of him being liberated but more literature seems to point to lots of people involved as non-consentual.

Wow, I've never read his story and I just finished reading the wiki on him. What an awful man. He persued pleasure for himself with no regard for anyone else. While he says he rejects all morality and ethics, he obviously has his own moral system with the end result being enlightenment and success (ideally).

It's really funny that you should bring up this debate! One of the members has a quote of his in her siggie and, white the quote sounds really "great" it got me to thinking, "Who is this guy that she's quoting?" So just YESTERDAY I was reading the Wikipedia entry on him, thinking, "OK, this person was not a good man!" I mean, "sadism" is named for him! Yikes!
I voted "Perv" - certainly not "enlightened" (whatever in the heck THAT means!) and too slimy to be classified as anything "other"!

It's funny because I read that siggie too and was thinking the same thing.

I would defend sadism but him? I can't.

Edit: I seen it again... Sorry Cari. I'm not picking on you, I just keep seeing your siggy and I wanted to post this.

As a person, he sounds creepy.

I voted other…..Has anyone seen the movie Quills? It has been a while since I seen the movie, or read much about him, but I think he was just extreme in his fetish, I kind of thought of him as a victim of being born in the era that he was. The BDSM lifestyle wasn’t on most peoples list back then of sexual things to try. Now he could find a plethora of people to fulfill his erotic fantasies and they would not only be willing they would enjoy it too. Plus if you’re a young women having orgies with older aristocrats and you get busted, back then it was better to save your own arse instead of admitting you were into it.

So I said other because I don’t think he was enlightened, although I do consider him a pervert on some level I think pervert is in the eye of the beholder. I do not find S&M to be perverted. Maybe some of his writings were perverted but who is to say that he actually lived that entirely out, and wasn’t just trying to make a name for himself as a literary pervo. After all I wouldn’t call a person a murderer for making a movie that involves murderers.

But I will say this he definitely had an obsession with sex, all kinds of sex.

You know I don't think S & M to be perverted either.. I can defend that... Him? No way. It wasn't consentual with all of his partners.

Well his S&M practices I doubt were always consensual, but it is hard to tell. He was fiercely hated, for his freethinking ways by the church. History is usually written by those who live the longest and I think the church at that time would have gone out of their way to paint him an even worse light. Kind of like when people think just because someone is gay, they are going to go after young boys KWIM? I dunno he could have been the devil himself, but I have a hard time believing everything that is written about him, because of the source.

((snicker)) Well, let's say you wouldn't be the first to feel that way about that type of written history!

FTR I would never support actual rape or anything gross like that. Probably should have mentioned that! (people probably think I am really weird)

I am curious who voted him enlightened? Come on, don't be shy....
