Now, this has been proved to be not a sponsored event:
snopes.com: Heineken Banners in Dogfighting Photo

What I don't get, is how people are still MAD at Heineken. This has popped up so many times on my Facebook feed by so many people, and not ONE cares that Heineken had no idea it was going on, and has taken proper steps. They still blame the company for choosing the bar to serve their drinks. I've even asked a few if the camera man was wearing a brand name shirt that we could see the logo on it would they be mad at that company.. and they've said yes. (I made the mistake of using Nike as an example.. next time I'll use a "I Love NY" shirt as an example or something).

So I guess my question really is, Would you blame a company who was inadvertently featured in a photo like this, be it by the marketing banners from a previous event, or the logo on someone's shirt?

Nope, I wouldn't. You can't always prevent asshats from doing things they shouldn't. In fact in most cases, you can't at all. You can't possibly see the future and know that your brand will never, ever be seen in a situation less than ideal(yes I know this is more than a situation less than ideal, I'm not demeaning that). This is NOT the first time a logo of some sort has been seen at an animal fighting event. It just so happens that some loudmouths got a hold of the pics and rather than focusing on the actual criminals, they went for the throat of the nearest blame victim they could find. Stupid if you ask me.

Bottom line NOT their fault. They did absolutely NOTHING wrong.

I would not, but I know that some people do. Once I joined the band in 6th grade we were told repeatedly that we needed to watch what we do when we are wearing our band shirts as that will reflect negatively on the band, the school, the instructor, etc. I think that the people who knew about it, who set it up, financed it, whatever are to blame. Heineken are no more to blame than the company that made the camera.

Thanks Bokkechick for my wonderful siggy!

Heineken is definitely not to blame. And honestly, I think they should bring a lawsuit against whoever used their brand on the flags. They have definitely done their reputation harm.

I find it hilarious people are all up in arms with Heineken over something they didn't do & yet act like I'm a whack job for boycotting Nestle for their human rights violations - I guess we just need to get an illegal dogfight held where Nestle advertising is, then people would care.

My dad posted this on Facebook a while back, the photo that said "BOYCOTT HEINEKEN!" He was so upset he sent them an e-mail:

This picture really upset me alot. So I contacted Heineken directly via email. This is their reply. It pays to investigate things fully before making judgements.
Dear Gerald,

This issue was first brought to our attention in April this year.

We want you to know that we do not, have not and would never support the disgusting act of dog fighting.

The pictures that are being spread on the internet were taken at a nightclub in Mongolia in October 2010. The night club owner rented his establishment to a third party who then held a dog fighting event - which in Mongolia is legal as long as alcohol is not served. That is why in the picture the bar is not open and no one is drinking. Disastrously the owner did not remove Heineken banners from his club.

We knew nothing about this activity nor were we involved in any way.

Once it was brought to our attention in April this year we took immediate action, including severing our relationship with the owner and the nightclub. Our statement on the issue has been on our website since April 18th 2012. You can read it by visiting our homepage, Heineken International B.V. | HEINEKEN is one of the world's great brewers and is committed to growth and remaining independent.. Please feel free to share it with others who may be concerned about what they have seen.

This photo going viral on facebook really bothers me. Do you endorse dog
fighting? I sure hope not. You may want to find out where this is coming from.
In today's world / economy I would think you would want to fully investigate
Thanks for your concerns
