Rylinn has a Chicco Keyfit 30 - and I was reading the book the other day and saw that after 11lbs you are supposed to take out the newborn insert.

Can anyone explain why this is?? To me it just looks like extra padding...wasn't sure why it would be a safety risk to keep it in?

Thank you!!

We have the same seat. I'm only guessing here... but by the time Sean hit 11lbs, the insert was making the seat pretty snug, so it just wouldn't have fit for much longer. Also, maybe they don't want the harness in the 2nd set of slots while the insert is still in. I think the seat seems to be nicely padded without the insert... I would take it out at 11lbs simply because I *try* to follow manufacturer's recommendations on things that concern safety. Even if I don't understand the reasoning, I hope that they've given it more thought than I have.

We did leave the head support in a bit longer. I couldn't find anything that said that you shouldn't, and it kept his head upright when he was sleeping. Now, he holds his head up by himself, even when sleeping, and the head support seemed to hold heat and make his head sweaty.

I don't know the exact explanation "why" they say to take it out at 11 lbs. It makes sense that it interferes with the safety of the seat in some way. I would take it out as soon as your adorable little girl is 11 lbs, because that's what it says to do.

Now, the head support pillow is different, you can keep that in until she's ready for the 3rd top slot. Remember that the head pillow needs to be installed one slot about where the harness is threaded.

the infant insert is for tiny newborns who's shoulders are below the bottom slots, the pad moves them up so the harness is at or bloew the shoulders, most babies at 11lbs reach the bottom slots, and it's not needed any longer, the head support can be left as long as needed.
