I read somewhere that you aren't supposed to put jackets on babies when they are in their car seat. Any suggestions of something that is safe to use while they are in their car seat that will also be warm enough for extremely cold weather?

For an infant (bucket) seat, you can get something like this or this. After you put the baby in the seat, tuck a nice warm blanket around her, then put the cover over the whole thing. But, DON'T get this! The difference is that the (very popular, more expensive) Bundle Me version has a portion that goes UNDER the baby. The problem is, the car seats weren't crash tested with the extra layer of padding, AND it could interfere with the straps, so they are NOT recommended! Only use the kind that go OVER the seat.

If your LO will be in a convertible seat by winter, it gets a bit harder. Some people use blankets and/or "capes" that go over the seat.

We had a cover when Rylie was in an infant seat. We put a hat on her, blanket tucked around her and mittens if it was super cold.

About January we had to put her in a convertible. We bought a jacket one size too large (it acctually was the only size we could find so late in the season) but it worked out well that her hands didn't fit out so it was easy to take off once we got in the car. Her carseat is in the middle so we would start the car and when it was warm enough we would get in and shut the door and take her jacket off to strap her in. Worked for us but i understand it won't work for everyone. IDK what I plan to do this year yet...any jacket around here thats warm enough is too bulky.

Thanks so much for that link, very helpful. I am thinking that we are going to get something like THIS From looking around the car seat safety website, this was said to be safe because it isn't very thick, but should be super warm. We were also looking at THIS but I don't know if it would really be warm enough, and I don't think that she would like not having her hands where she can see them to play with stuff, also is a lot more expensive.
