Ok.. I'm driving myself crazy trying to figure out where to place this carseat. My van is a 1997, so it does not have latch system, and the dealership will not install one, as they told me it was not necessary.

I have a Pontiac Transport minivan. There are 3 seats in the first row of the back, and then there are 2 seats behind those. The carseat I have is an Evenflo Momentum65 LX Convertible Car Seat. I originally placed this behind the drivers seat.. Well this position is not working because the carseat is touching the back of the driver's seat, and everything says that it should not be touching the back of a seat. I have the driver's seat moved as foward as it can be. I have long legs so I cant move it foward any more than it is. If I put behind the passenger seat, where my DH usually sits, that is not safe either, cause he also has long legs, and putting the carseat there would also make it really hard for anybody to get in or out of the backseat.

The middle seat is only a lap belt, and doesn't seem like this would be a safe place to put the seat, since I don't have the latch system in the car. Then there are the two seats in the 3 row. These both have a shoulder belt. and I could move these seats foward enough.. My other kids are older, my youngest is 5 and he is a booster seat, that can pretty much go anywhere in the car.

If everybody is in my car, I need 6 seats. There are currently 7. One of them could be removed if need be. So what should I do? Would it be ok to have the baby way in the back?

Thanks in advance for the help..

You can absolutely install a car seat RFing or FFing with a lap belt only. In fact, that is the ONLY use for a lap belt - it should never be used for a child in a booster or for anyone not in a car seat (i.e., teenager and older). You can install the seat in the 3rd row if you choose. It may be harder to get baby in and out of the seat, but if that's the configuration that works, you'll make it work.

Does your car manual or car seat manual indicate that it cannot touch the front seat? In my Camry, a car seat cannot touch the front seat because of airbag issues, but in my Expedition, a car seat can touch the front seat. It all depends on the combination of car and car seat you're using.

Your 5 year old should be in a high back booster, and he can sit anywhere in the car. However, if you convert it to a no back booster once he outgrows the high back, he must sit in a seat with a headrest. All teens/adults who are not in restraints also need to sit in seats with headrests. The headrest provides protection to the neck and spine in case of an accident by reducing the amount of whiplash.

Well I dont have airbags anywhere expect for in the front. I just have been told by a few people that the car seat was not supposed to touch the back of any seat. He did outgrow his high back booster, so he is using a no back booster, but he is always in a seat with a full seat belt and a headrest. All the seats in the car have a headrest. The only lap belt in the car is the one in the middle seat. If that would work then that would be perfect.

It all depends on what your car manual and car seat manual say. Unless the people who've said this are CPSTs (have received training in installing and using car seats), they may be wrong. The reason for a car seat not touching the front seat does have to do with front airbags. In my Camry, if a car seat is touching the front seat, it indicates to whatever sensors that there is someone sitting in the front seat because of the weight the car seat pushes onto the seat back. So the airbag may deploy when it is not supposed to, which can injure other passengers. If your car has airbags, please read the manual to see which is correct.

Your 5 year old already grew out of a high back booster?! He must be very tall for his age. My 6 year old is still in a 5 point harness and still has at least 2-3 years before she'd be ready for a backless booster.

Yes, the baby's seat can be installed with a lap belt or in the 3rd row. Lap belts can only be used when installing an infant carseat, convertible carseat or a harness car seat, because they are not safe with boosters or older children/adults.
