I wanted to post this awhile ago, but a few things popped up, In addition, I wanted us all to have the chance to mourn Evan before sharing my sonís story.

At my 36 week appointment my perinatalogist and I decided to go ahead with induction at 37 weeks (assuming a lung maturity amnio went well). The logic was that with my many high risk issues and prior losses, if Grant was ready to come out there was no reason to keep him in there, thus waiting for something bad to happen. Little bugger had flipped breech at the last session, so we scheduled the amnio for Thursday April 29 and the C-section for Friday.

The amnio went well Ė Grantís lungs were mature AND heíd flipped again! I have no idea where he found the room. But we decided right then to induce Ė we were so excited!!!

To make a long story short, the induction failed. Grant would not sit still for monitoring (pissed the nurses of and frustrated us too) and Grant would. not. descend. into my pelvis. The doctors werenít terribly surprised, as Grant had been VERY active and pretty uncooperative. So just after 2:30pm they wheeled me in for my section.

Oh boy, it did not go well, for me at least. Somewhere in my 40 hours of labor, my epidural must have moved, because it didnít work on my left side. I got to feel everything until after some trial and error they found something that made me stoned but sorta worked. I remember when my son was born. And I remember him not crying. I sort of remember them bringing him over to see me. And then I remember my husband going with him to the NICU.

Grant Harrison was born at 3:31pm on Saturday May 1st. He weighed a healthy 6lbs 4oz and was 19 inches long.

Grant was hypotonic (floppy) and had a seizure at birth. He had apnea during his seizures, meaning he stopped breathing. It was a pretty serious situation for such a handsome looking kid. (He is a clone of DH). They were worried it was an infection, or that it was due to oxygen loss during labor, but neither was likely and they quickly eliminated them as options. And since he was full term, breathed fine except during seizures and had mature lungs, it wasnít respiratory distress syndrome, something you often see in preemies. The scary remaining option was a metabolic disorder. I canít tell you how bad most of those are.

But a funny thing happened. Grant started getting better. He needed supportive care, but other than a medication to prevent seizures, he just got better. The doctors were amazed. That is quite unusual in the NICU. And basically impossible for babies with metabolic disorders. So we had the wonderful news that Grant didnít have a horrible disorder (and tests confirmed that). Grant continued to get better, on his own, and after 12 days in the NICU we brought home our healthy son.

We will never really know what happened, in part because he got better. And because he got better on his own, they have assured us that they are quite sure this is over, and will not return. Just as a safety measure he is on an anti-seizure med and a reflux med for just a few months.

Grant is now almost 1 month old and is a happy little guy. He eats well (now weighing over 7lb), he sleeps well, he loves being held by family, he even travels well (locally), we take a lot of trips to ordinary places and he does well when we do.

We are elated to finally have a living child. It was a long road, with a lot of losses, and a lot of effort to conceive, but it was worth it. I donít think about the time and effort and money to conceive when I look at him. I just think about what a miracle he is.

Now that we have our miracle we have decided that we are done ttc. I will be getting my tubes tied at some point, recurrent pregnancy loss and infertility and high risk health issues and Grantís NICU stay are enough to convince us. We only wanted one child, and with Ethan we actually have two (plus two more if you count the triplets, though they werenít actually born).

Since Grant has come home I have healed perfectly from my section but I have developed postpartum depression. But I am on medication and have a lot of support, and I am happy that with support I am still able to care for my son.

Picture time!

Thank you Vicki for my awesome siggy!!

I was just wondering about you and I am so glad things are well with you all! I bet those first couple days were absolutely scarey, but seeing him heal on his own must have been so reassuring. I'm sorry the induction and the c-sec didn't go as well as they could have, but they are DONE and you have your miracle boy with you! Congratulations!!!
