I'm not into that myself, but I think the little local ones are fine. Like the ones where little girls put on a pretty dress, maybe sing a song, and everyone gets a little award for participating. I think the ones on tv that have little girls getting fake tans and everything else border on child abuse. Plus all the moms seem to be overweight and in sweat pants....living through your child much?

I agree w/ this. The ones that the girls do that are relaxed and just for fun are fine but if parents are breaking the bank and "training" their kids to perform like monkeys then the line has been crossed. And frankly, I think those kids on tv look ridiculous, like 40 yr olds trapped in a childs body.

I think it is all wrong and trashy. But I have a friend who was Miss Georgia or something like that back in the day and she is a wonderful person, so who am I to judge. I do know, though, that she doesn't have her girls in anything like that.

I think the ones where they are doing make up, sky high hair, tans, and fake teeth, yes! Those little girls are going to grow up thinking they have to be beautiful to mean something.

Oh, man, you should see my husband scream at the TV when that show is on. I don't like them at all.. those beautiful baby contests in the mall or something are a different story though.

It always strikes me as so ironic, when they say they do it for their education fund, because they win $500, but that's after they've spent at least double (triple) that amount of money on the competition.

I think it sends a wrong message, that you're valued just for being beautifull.

Agreed with the above. I wouldn't be signing my girls up for those, though I do happen to think they are freaking gorgeous. I make sure I always tell my girls they are smart and funny and all kinds of other compliments besides just being pretty...but I do tell them that too. I don't want them to grow up and feel physical beauty is the beginning and end all.

I would never put such an emphasis on physical appearance. Gah.

I think parents who do those things are off their nut personally, how about letting your kid play in the mud and do drawings instead?
