Hello! I do not have children yet but I have been a vegitarian since I was 12 and plan to raise all my children vegitarian. people have told me that it would be unhealthy to raise young children as vegitarians and will effect their growth both physically and mentally so this is my question: is there a Protein and or iron suplement that is safe or specially made for babys and young children? thank you so much!

hi adrienne!

i am no expert, nor do i claim to be, but i do know that it is perfectly healthy for children to be raised vegetarian, and by you taking the pro-active researching role, you will ensure this!

i am preganant with my first child, so i am not going to give you advice on the requirements of growing children yet. i will become informed myself when i cross that brigde, but i am totally planning on raising my children veg also.

i do know the company SALUS makes amaing liquid vegetarian supplements, and they do have a childrens formula for iron and other things. i am curently taking their line of iron supplements, as well as a calcium-magnisium formula. i am also a vegan, and it is reasuring to me to know that i am good in these every day.

as for my protien, i have to make HUGE concious decisions to keep my intake high, and i supplement with Hemp Protien Shakes every day. tastes good, easy to make and eay to take!

My children, and my sisters children are fifth generation vegetarians. We all seem to be doing quite well! My great uncle, who is a second generation vegetarian, as is his wife, are in their nineties and very healthy, driving around cross country. Sharp as a whip! As for protien supplements, I don't really know many, I don't generally recommend them because they have many additives frequently. A good one though is nutritional yeast. It has the b vitamins that are not in ample supply elsewhere, vegetarianwise, and also complete protein. If you are preg and a vegetarian I also strongly recommend that you eat things with Omega 3 in them. THese are important for a good brain, eyes and nervous system. Barilla pasta has Omega3 fortified, also you can buy Omega3 eggs, I strongly suggest if you do this, to shell out the little bit more money and buy the ones that say DHA on them. Also, eat avocados. Good luck with any babies you may have some day. I wouldn't worry too much though, research is always great though.
