How do you deal with your LO's tantrums when they can't express what they are feeling with words?

I try to get him to calm down and take some deep breaths and then try to tell me again what he wants. Sometimes it works and sometimes he gets even more frustrated.
Thank you KimberlyD0 for my absolutely beautiful siggy!

Evan says "De" for words he does not know. Like, for Plane he'll say "De" and most of the time I know he means "plane" but others time I don't and I say to him "Mommy doesn't understand what you need/want, I'm sorry". It breaks my heart! He is still young, but I think does get frustrated when I try & guess what he means, when it's not right...

I just ask Alexis to show me what she wants. Though she is really into movies and we have a bunch of seasame street videos for her and we have problems there because she will ask for a movie, and I will put one in, and if its wrong, we have a meltdown. Or she'll say Elmo movie and well most of them are Elmo. Same thing with the music. We just keep changing them until we find the one she wants, and then try to reinforce the names of the movie/music so next time she can ask for things by name. She'll still get frustrated with showing us though, because once she takes us near there, we still have to guess what she wants and we are often wrong.
