I thought I would share some of the more common Maori (Native NZ) names, and also some popular Polynesian names... I have done the pronounciation as close as I can, but it's hard to write down the way they are pronounced exactly.. but if anyone would like to hear any of the names said properly, I don't mind making a recording of the names to post here

Maori names...

Amiria [Ah-mee-ree-ah] - industrious (form of Amelia)
Aroha [Ah-row-ha] - love
Hine [Hee-nay] - girl
Marika [Ma-ree-ka] - quiet & careful
Ngaio [N-eye-oh] - a name taken from NZ's native flora
Pania [Pah-nee-ya] - a mythical maiden of the sea
Reka [Ree-ka] - sweet

Amiri [Ah-mir-ee] - evoking the east winds
Hemi [Hem-ee] - translation of James
Mahora [Ma-hore-ah] - flat land
Rawiri [Rah-wi-ree] - the beloved one
Rangi [Rung-ee] - the heavens or sky
Tane [Tah-nay] - god of the forest
Tangaroa [Tah-ngah-roah] - god of the sea

Polynesian names...

Ema [Ee-mah] - beloved
Hika [Hee-kah] - daughter
Ilisapesi [Ill-ee-sah-pe-see] - blessed one
Jaimia [Jae-meea] - I love
Kiri [Ki-ree] (ki as in kid) - bark of a tree
Kohia [Kor-hee-ah] - the passion flower
Lani [Lah-nee] - the sky or heavens
Mahina [Mah-hee-nah] - the moon

Afi [Ah-fee] - fire
Ahomana [ah-hoh-mah-nah] - thunder
Alika [Ah-lee-kah] - defender of humankind
Ariki [Ah-ree-kee] - chief
Ihorangi [Ee-hor-rung-ee] - rain
Kahil [Kah-hill] - young
Keoni [Kee-on-ee] - the righteous one
Kereteki [Keh-ree-te-kee] - a figure from Polynesian myth
Kupe [Koo-pay] - a famous Polynesian explorer
