I'm seeing this name around a bit (on here!) recently, and it's definitely a top choice for a future baby.

BabyNamesWorld says this:
Quote:
Cordelia is a character in Shakespeare's play "King Lear". The name is of uncertain derivation. Some claim it is from the Welsh name Creiddylad, allegedly meaning 'jewel of the sea', although other reliable sources state there is no evidence for a true Celtic origin. Another theory derives the name from the phrase 'coeur de lion'. It may also be an elaboration of the Latin 'cor' (heart).
and BehindtheName says this:
Quote:
From Cordeilla, possibly a Celtic name of unknown meaning. According to Geoffrey of Monmouth, Cordeilla was the youngest of the three daughters of King Lear and the only one to remain loyal to her father. When adapting the character for his play 'King Lear' (1606), Shakespeare altered the spelling to Cordelia.
Its not currently in the US top 1000, and hasn't been since 1950.

So, what are your thoughts on Cordelia? It is appealing, even though it's so uncommon? Do you think it might rise in popularity in the future?

I love it. It was used for a character in the Buffy/Angel universe and I really liked it on her, so it really grew on me. I did not, however, like how they called her Cordy. I prefer Delia or Cori

I love it too, although not for my own child. I'm an Anne of Green Gables fan, and anyone else who is probably gets a little smile on their face when they hear the name Cordelia

I think it is unusual without being something that comes across as bizarre or as a complete unknown to people. I think it has an appealing sound, and would age well on a girl. I also love the nn Delia.

For me, the tragic literary association would be a bit of a stumbling block, but that is pretty much my only hang-up.

Eek, Cordy is awful to me. I think Cora would be my preference as far as nicknames go, but we also considered Fu Diya as a Chinese compliment to Cordelia Fu. (In China, the family name goes first.) So maybe Dia / Diya would be the nickname? Delia is sweet too.

Anne of Green Gables is one of my favorite associations with Cordelia (I know nothing about Buffy), and maybe I'm weird, but I actually LIKE the Shakespeare connection.

Cordelia is just NMSAA, it seems pretentious to me. I agree "Cordy" is awful, but I would like Delia as a NN.

Although I wouldn't use it for my own child, I sorta like it.

I really like the name. I like Cory as a nn, Delia is a beautiful name, but I don't think of it as a nn. To me Delia is too long for a nn. I do think that is will raise in popularity.

Thanks girls! seems most people at least appreciate, even if not for their own children.

Or maybe those who dislike it were just staying out of the thread!

Anyway, thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I like Literary connections, it's just the whole murdered by her family bit that gives me pause.

I think Cora and Dia are both great nns, though.
