The social security administration has a really neat website that list popular names by year, decade and such. You can look as far back as the 1880's. It's pretty neat, especially if you're trying to make sure you're selecting a unique name for your little bean!

Yes, the SSA site is great.

Be aware though that the actual popularity of names are slightly misleading, as they only measure the popularity of specific spellings. For example:

Caitlin ranked number 207, which may make you think that it's less common than, say Samantha... *but*, it's just counting that one spelling.

Cailyn is 872.
Caitlyn is 199.
Kaitlin is 344.
Kaitlyn is 41. (making it significantly higher)
Katelyn is 61.
Kaelyn is 347.
Kaitlynn is 525.
Katelynn is 270.
Katlyn is 787.
Kailyn is 492.

From the years of 2000 to February of 2007, there were 101,188 Samanthas born. And 18,049 Caitlins. However, there were also:

15,361 Caitlyns
9,631 Kaitlins
51,853 Kaitlyns
4,892 Kaitlynns
8,771 Katelynns
35,894 Katelyns
3,520 Kaelyns
4,378 Katlyns
3,497 Kailyns
+ the 18,049 Caitlins

Much more than Samantha. Heck, that's even more than Madison (which is ranked at number three for 2006). From the years 2000-Feb 2007, there were 142,410 Madisons born.

These are just something to keep in mind when looking up the popularity of names. Research where the different spellings rank, and where very similar names rank as well (i.e. Caitlin & Katelynn, but also Kaelin, or Kailyn, or even Kailey or Kayla). When choosing a name like Caitlin, there may not be 5 other Caitlins in your child's class, but there may be 2 Katelynns, a Kaitlyn, a Kailyn, and a Kailey. Just food for thought.
