We have been considering fostering to adopt for some time.. we jsut received our packet in the mail, and i was wondering, how longs does the process normally take? With classes, home meetings, and such?? Do you have to pay something in order to Foster or adopt?? we are so new to this, and JM has always been like home to me!

We have just started looking into it as well. I'm in Australia though so I think the process here is probably vastly different to the US.

DH and I have just started our classes (Sunday will be our third). We are not planning to foster right now... only adopt a sibling group. Though, if DH changes his mind, I'd foster in a heartbeat.

In Alabama, the classes are 3 hours each week for 10 weeks. They require 30 hours. Some states are less, though, so check your packet, it should say. Also, our DHR does not take applications for adoption of healthy newborn babies, nor applications for healthy white children under the age of 8 or healthy african-american children under the age of 2. Check your packet for things like this and make sure you are willing to foster/adopt the type of children that are in need in your area. We just don't have any kids in the system ready to adopt that are those ages.

We require 2 homestudies. The first is done during the 10 weeks of class and the next is done within a month after the class is over. Then they have 90 days to approve or not approve our home as a foster/adoptive home. Once approved we just wait until children who come close to our description of what we think we can handle come into care. I know that if you decide to foster here, you'll probably get children within the week of being approved. I'm also thinking that we might do respite care. We could take another child or two while the foster family takes a break.

We do not have to pay anything yet. Our fingerprints and background checks are all free. The classes are all free. All that. I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure the legal fees of adoption are paid by the state unless we hire a private attorney (we aren't planning to do that). You will also receive a small (very small) stipend from the state to help care for the children who are in foster care. You may also qualify for continuing stipend after adoption depending on the needs of the child (I know medically challenged children qualify in our state).

Hope that helped a little. I called our DHR and spoke with the head of the foster system there to ask all my questions before the class.

A good thing to know though, since the classes are free, you can take those and decide in the midst or after them that you want to wait or it isn't for you. You don't get penalized.

I wish you lots of luck in your journey!!

Thank you to AlexAiden Mommy for my beautiful siggie!

Hello I live in OR and its pretty close to the last post. We had to take the same classes (same amount and duration) we had our first homestudy before the classes because in OR you have to be invited to the classes. After the classes we had two more homestudies then we met w/ our case worker for a individual interview. We started I believe last march (07) and were supposed to be looking @ children in dec. unfortunalty my DH got transfered to a different city and county through his job so luckily our caseworker was able to forward our info to someone here and we have had 2 home studies and should be looking @ children the beginning of next mo. I believe it is all free as well. Good luck to you.
