I think there used to be one or two here looking at Africa. Lemme see what I can dig up for you. I'm quite sure it varies by country. Is there a particular one you're interested in?

hey Zoey! BensMom told me that you were interested in African adoption. My husband and I had planned on adopting from Africa before we decided to ttc again.

We had gotten only as far as the homestudy, but we learned an awful lot about the process and Africa in general.

Here's what I can tell you . . . adoption from Africa is relatively inexpensive. We were told that, at that time, to adopt from Liberia, it would cost us about $12,000.00. Back in October, that was about to change, though, due to ever changing standards and laws.

The wait was actually very short, too. It could have been as short as 2 weeks or as long as 6 months. Even 6 months is a relatively short time to wait in the adoption world.

The thing to be concerned about is the health of the child you bring home. I know of a family who brought their precious little boy home with Malaria. He was very sick but is doing very, very well now. There are also quite a few little ones with HIV.

I'm not sure how things work for other countries like Ethiopia. I know that it's gaining in popularity.

Our heart was definitely in Africa. Should we decide to go back to adoption, and we may in the future, we will definitely revisit the idea of African adoption.

Best wishes! If you have any other questions, just send me a PM!

ETA: When we last checked, they were growing more strict about who they were going to allow to adopt from Africa. They were really concerned about religious affiliation and race. They weren't completely opposed to adopting out to white families, but need to make sure they were the best fit.

!!! dh and I were looking into adopting from ethiopia for a while. we were just waiting until i was 25. since we have become pregnant so our plans are put on hold for a bit. the cost was around 12000-15000 depending on travel prefrances, etc. The wait seems to be the same as liberia. All the kids are tested for hiv as well as other sickness.

here is the link to the agency i had been looking at. i havnt checked into it since mid-last year so somethings might have changed.

it looks as though some things have changed a bit.

We used WHFC the link the above person posted and have adopted two children from Ethiopia our daughter back in 2004 and our son in 2006. The price range is from 18,000-25000 depending on the agency and also including the travel and paper work that needs to be stamped with offical seals. We traveled to pick up our children and stayed in country for 10days. The kids range in age from 3months-13years. Kids with HIV can be adopted but it's a lengthy process. The wait time now at WHFC is up to a year for an infant and shorter time frames for older children. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.
