Hi, my name is erin. I have a 22mo old daughter, and my husband and i lost the baby from my second pregnancy last New Year's Eve. The baby had a genetic disorder and DH and I have decided not to have any more biological children, but we want to adopt!!!

I just have a couple questions. Pretty much, how do you get started in the process. How much did everything cost? Do you have to be rich or just rich with love to give? DH and I don't come from a wealthy family, but we work hard and we have what we need to care for our daughter. We were prepared to have another baby as well.... but that didn't work out as planned.

Thanks for your input!

Well- you get started by deciding what your family needs/wants. Do you want a baby? Domestic or International? Could you consider adopting an older child or a child with special needs? I personally adopted waiting children from DSS and so that is considerably less money than an international or domestic infant. No you don't have to be rich. Costs vary depending on choices. After finalizing an adoption there are also tax credits and things you can claim. Some companies also help their employees with adoptions. When you adopt, you are also covered under the Family Leave Act just like when you gave birth.
Here are some links you can check out.

These are just a few and the last one has a good list of steps. It's wonderful that you are considering adoption!! Good luck!

I don't have anything to add... just wanted to say welcome! We're thinking about adopting a couple of older children in the future, so I kinda hang around this board to learn the ropes.

Hi and welcome to the group! I'm Marla, mom of 4, including 2 bio sons and 2 daughters from China. lblackst gave you some great advice, the first thing you'll need to do is just narrow down the options a bit until you decide what is best for your family. I wish you the very best and hope that you'll join us here often!
