Im married and in my twenties. My hubby and I have a 2 year old. I would like to adopt a child between the ages of 4-8 years old within the next few years. Will adoption agencies let a young couple do this? Do you have to make a certain amount of money? The child would have thier own bedroom so I know I have that one covered.
Thanks for your help

Hi and welcome!! The answer to your question will depend on several factors, including where you'd like to adopt from. For international adoption, most countries have minimum age, income and length of marriage requirements. Domestic adoption, however, will depend on the laws of your state. You might contact a local agency or your state to see if you can get some info on minimum requirements and see if you qualify. Good luck and let us know if you start the process!!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe in the U.S., the age is 21 to adopt children of the state. It's 30+ in foreign adoptions.

Edit - LOL! We responded at the same time. I'd just go to your state's website if you're wanting to do a domestic adoption. I believe you're in Louisiana, right? The state's website is http://www.state.la.us/wps/wcm/conne...iana.gov/Home/ and the Dept of Soc Services Adoption Website is http://dss.louisiana.gov/departments/ocs/A...n_Services.html.

Also look at this page: http://dss.louisiana.gov/Documents/O...nQuestions.pdf

"Anyone interested in being a Foster/Adoptive Parent is welcome to call for more information and to attend an orientation session. Applicants must be at least 21 years of age, have sufficient income to meet their own basic needs, and be in good physical, emotional and mental health. A Foster/Adoptive Parent can be single, married, divorced, or widowed. Foster/Adoptive Parent applicants must be committed to provide the child with positive forms of discipline and cannot use physical punishment of any kind.'

Like the other ladies have already stated it depends on what type of adoption you are going through if it's domestic you have to follow your state's guide lines and if it's interstate adoption you have to follow your state laws and the state laws of the state the child is in. Just as in International you have to follow your country laws and the country laws where the child is from.

You can adopt internationally as young as 21, depending on the country. China is 30. Guatemala and most other is 25 unless you are married, then 21. I was 27 when I adopted my son from Guatemala.

Usuall you need to be above the poverty line by some %.
